Industry and Market Development Program

The Industry and Market Development Program is one of three programs available to help Alberta's livestock and meat industry create a profitable and sustainable future.

Program Details

A total of $5 million is available for the 2011/2012 fiscal year. This program is designed to support business, market and capacity development in the livestock and meat industry. The areas of Focus for the Industry and Market Program include:

Consumer Focus: Support is provided to the industry to develop and implement communication, marketing and value added initiatives to increase Alberta's market share in the domestic and international markets. Assistance is provided to industry associations and businesses to conduct market assessments and customer research that complement the development of value added products. Communication, advertising and marketing initiatives of industry organizations and businesses would deliver an Alberta Story that connects the producer to the consumer.

Unique Selling Proposition: Program supports industry through building leadership and management capacity specifically in the areas of a unique selling proposition. This may include, but is not limited to areas of environment, animal welfare and food safety. The industry understands their ethical responsibility conserve the environment, ensure animal well-being, and protect public health through food safety. The program supports activities that establish baselines, develop voluntary standards and verify their practices.

Professional and Innovation Capacity: Through ALMA's sponsorships industry is building skills, knowledge and expertise that accelerates adoption of new technology and research, fosters new ideas and innovation and promotes partnerships and information sharing.

Eligible Applicants:

  • Existing or prospective marketing associations working in partnership with Alberta food processors to promote specific Alberta livestock and meat products.
  • Industry associations serving the livestock industry.
  • Educational institutions including universities, colleges and technical schools.
  • Government organizations and agencies.
  • Existing or prospective Alberta companies that can increase the value and sales of Alberta products.
  • Existing or prospective supply chains that produce and market meat products.
  • Existing or prospective Alberta exporters (companies, partnerships) that market Alberta meat and/or livestock products to international markets.
  • Existing and prospective Alberta processors that use or intend to use Alberta livestock products as ingredients for product destined for
  • international markets.

Eligible Expenses

  • Time for specific activities on the projects
  • Project management and consulting fees justified as essential to the project
  • Travel to project sites, to present to or discuss project with managers and/or policy makers
  • Travel for information gathering or dissemination purposes
  • Cost of supplies directly required for the project
  • Cost associated with consumer engagement, education, communication and awareness
  • Cost associated with industry capacity and capability development, skills and leadership development, new business model creation, education and training.
  • Market research and intelligence
  • Marketing plans
  • Promotional materials including product samples for markets
  • Development and enhancement of Alberta livestock product brands
  • Packaging development and labeling
  • Retail and food service promotions of Alberta products
  • Travel expenses and trade shows

 

Assistance will be on a 75:25 cost shared basis with the applicant to a maximum grant of $1million of the eligible costs per project. However the cost shared levels may be decreased at ALMA's discretion.
